Caring For Wood Patio Furniture

Owning wood patio furniture is not as simple as buying the various pieces and then leaving them out on the patio. You need to take care of the wood patio furniture and ensure that they last a long time. How do you do this?

1. Take them inside

One of the most important things you have to learn about wood patio furniture is the fact that exposure to the elements tend to slowly destroy them. Although wood patio furniture is meant to be placed outside, there are certain instances when it would be wise for you to bring them inside.

It is often advisable to bring the wood patio furniture inside when you are facing the winter season. That is, of course, if you are not living in a place where the climate is temperate. This will help you make sure that no moisture gets into the wood and rots it.

By taking the wood patio furniture inside, you would be able to make sure that your investment remains for a long, long time.

2. Buy covers

If you find that carrying those heavy pieces of wood patio furniture needs more effort than you can exert, you might want to consider buying furniture covers instead. When doing so, you need to make sure that you get high quality ones which give your wood patio furniture lots of protection.

When you cover them up, make sure that they are completely covered so as not to let in any dust or moisture. This ought to help you slow down the ravages of the elements.

3. Use rubber leg covers

Many people fail to pay attention to the legs of wood patio furniture. They often go to great lengths to make sure that the body of the furniture remains covered but neglect to see that the legs are exposed just the same to the environment.

Because of this, they are surprised and frustrated when they learn that all their efforts have come to naught. In order to truly protect your wood patio furniture, you need to protect the parts which encounter moisture the most - the legs.

You need to make sure that the legs are not exposed to moisture which could definitely ruin them. A great solution to this would be to give rubber soles to the wood patio furniture. This would help you make sure that the legs remain dry even when the ground is wet.

The Enclosed Patios - How to Build One

Having a patio is great way to improve your homes. This addition would generally allow you to enjoy much of your underused spaces. Hence, you get a chance to conduct parties, lounge and get a better site of your garden, and you also get an additional space for other kinds of activities. However, patios are no longer limited to be just an open addition to your homes. You have the choice to enclose it so you can do your relaxation activities in this part of the house all year round. If you want this privilege you can choose to build an enclosed patio or opt to convert your existing one.

When you build an enclosed patio, know that they have different forms and means of construction. The first one is the sunroom. This is just some structure that you can have outside your home, generally attached to your house, with the purpose of being able to further enjoy your surroundings. And the good thing about it is that you can be heavily protected by extreme conditions. Typically it is built with the use of brick, wood or glass for the base or framing and the PVC is used as the knee wall. The roofing can be made of glass because transparency is much needed for the sun to come in (since that what its name denotes).

Updates on sunrooms involve use of aluminum as part of the base structure. Roofing can also be made of shingles and other roofing materials similar to the main house only that this time people would normally have skylights on them to allow more natural light to come in.

Another type of enclosed patio that you can build is a screened porch. How different is this to the sunroom? They are similar to the sunroom and sometimes with fiberglass or glass roofing. But the walls are made of screens. Hence, there is free flowing of air in all parts of the room. So everything is all natural. You have seating areas, tables and plants all around you. Hence, there is no need for heating and airconditioning.

There is also what they call a portable enclosed patio. How do they make this? They use canopies and attach it to the main house. Canopies are usually wall less. Hence, to convert them into enclosed patios, you can make use of those with nettings. They can either be built in with the canopies or you can make your own through a curtain type. Once the netting is in use, the canopy would resemble a screen porch. The only difference is that you have the option to take disconnect it from your homes and put them somewhere in the middle of your lawn.

These are some of the ideas that you can use to make an enclosed patio at home. To be able to choose wisely, you need to look at the advantages and disadvantages of all the choices. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you want to be able to use the room all throughout the year?
2. DO you want your home value to increase?
3. Do you want to be able to bring down the room with ease?
4. How much are you willing to spend?
5. How urgent do you need the room?

So, good luck to you. And hopefully, you will be able to build the right kind of enclosed patio for your homes.

Care and Maintenance of Your Outdoor Wood Patio Furniture

Some of the most beautiful Outdoor Patio and Deck Furniture is made from wood. Wood is a natural product, but when exposed to moisture and changes in temperature and humidity, wood will respond in a variety of ways. Proper maintenance of your Wood Patio Furniture will ensure longevity through years of exposure to the elements.

Caring For Different Types of Wood

Teak is perhaps the most desirable and, arguably, the most expensive outdoor wood furniture available. Teak is a beautiful, honey-colored, dense, tropical hardwood that is resistant to insect infestation and contains natural oils which make it resistant to rot and decay. Unfortunately, teak trees require at least 60 years to reach harvestable size, and, because teak furniture is in such high demand, teak supply is not as readily available as supplies of other woods like cedar, oak, or pine. With supplies not able to meet demand, the price of teak has increased dramatically. The advantage of teak, though, is that, with proper maintenance, it can last for more than 50 years, which makes the initial investment worth it for many homeowners.

While cleaning teak is not necessary, it is not a bad idea to clean outdoor teak furniture each year to remove any buildup of pollen, sap, or mildew. Follow each cleaning with a coat of teak oil (optional) if you wish to keep the wood its original honey color.

Other tropical hardwoods, like Eucalyptus, have become increasingly popular as the price of teak has grown prohibitive for many homeowners. Eucalyptus wood, like teak, is beautiful, dense, durable, and resistant to rot and insect infestation. The rapid growth of eucalyptus trees makes them more readily available and more easily affordable. Like outdoor teak furniture, outdoor eucalyptus furniture can be treated with teak oil following an annual cleaning to help preserve the wood's natural color (if desired).

Other popular choices for outdoor wooden furniture include cedar, redwood, oak, and pine. These woods, though (especially pine), must be treated with a preservative to prevent decay, which can occur quickly depending on weather conditions. Protecting this wood furniture with a water-resistant stain, protective oil, or polyurethane is also recommended. Your local hardware store will have many options from which to choose, and a store associate should be able to assist you in selecting the most appropriate protectant for the weather conditions in your area. Furniture should be cleaned annually, and the protectant you choose will need to be reapplied regularly (check manufacturer's instructions for details).

Cleaning Your Wood Furniture

Outdoor wood furniture should be cleaned once a year. Mix one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of a gentle dishwashing liquid, and a gallon of water, and gently scrub the mixture on the surface of your wood furniture with a soft bristle brush. Wash the solution from the furniture, and allow it to dry completely in the sun. Repainting or restaining wood furniture may be necessary at this time to cover and protect any worn or damaged areas.

Protecting Your Furniture From Water, Temperature, and Chemical Damage

No matter what type of wood is used for your outdoor furniture, all woods are susceptible to rot and decay if left in moist, wet, or shady areas for extended periods of time. Wood that becomes saturated with rain water is more likely to warp and rot, so using waterproof protective covers when your furniture is not in use is highly recommended to keep your wooden patio furniture in good shape. The bases of furniture legs are probably the most vulnerable when it comes to water damage. If wood furniture is kept in the grass, at the poolside, or on a surface that collects even a small level of rain water, the legs can become easily saturated and damaged. Covering the bottoms of each furniture leg with rubberized material or small sections of cedar fencing material will help protect your furniture from rotting from the bottom up.

In addition, temperature extremes can take a toll on wood furniture. During the cold winter months, keeping your wooden patio furniture protected in a shed or garage is highly recommended.

Finally, exposure to chemicals including solvents and chlorine, and exposure to common items such as alcoholic beverages, plants and flower nectar, and hot items (off of a grill, for example) can stain or damage wood and many wood finishes. It is also important to prevent plastic objects, like plastic table cloths, toys, placemats, and appliance covers, from lying on wood furniture for a long period of time because plastic can discolor wood. Plastic can also stick to and damage a wood finish.

Lifespan of Outdoor Wood Furniture

The lifespan for any wooden patio furniture depends greatly on the type of wood used and local weather conditions. Properly maintaining your outdoor wood furniture can significantly improve its lifespan and maximize your investment. Outdoor wood furniture makes a comfortable, natural addition to any backyard, deck, patio, or garden, and, with care, it will continue to make a beautiful impression for many years.

Quality Teak Patio Furniture

There has been a real surge in the interest of teak wood patio furniture. With the popularity of the internet and beautiful mail order catalogs consumers are much more aware of the beauty of teak furniture. Import Companies have also made teak wood easier to obtain. Teak is also more affordable now as well.

There are many suppliers of quality teak wood furniture. Quality teak wood patio furniture manufacturers make their furniture by hand and build it to last a long time. A good warranty 0f 10 years and a money back guarantee of 60 days is also a sign of quality. A sign of quality is that flush mortise and tenon joinery is used in every slat for quality. A quality manufacturer will use kiln dried teak between 10-12% moisture content to make sure it will last a very long time. Some manufacturers will first sand by machine then sand by hand after construction.

Teak wood has a high concentration of oil that allows it to last for decades. Teak is resistant to mold, mildew, splintering, rot and insects. It is extremely sturdy and heavy. Teak wood can be as maintenance-free as you would like; maintenance is not truly required.

Teak wood is expensive because it is in high demand and it requires tedious processing. Teak trees are aged 30 to 50 years and then stripped of their bark for three years, as they die a lasting death. The trees are then, cut down. Then the wood is kiln dried for eight months until most of the moisture is gone. Once the wood is dry, the lumber is sliced.

A large amount of the world's teak comes from Indonesia. The Indonesian government manages a majority of the teak supply. Plantations grow a majority of the teak trees. The Plantations operate under the Smart Wood program of the Rainforest Alliance, an organization that encourages ecologically sound practices of timber harvesting.

Lesser quality teak furniture that you get at a big-box store could start deteriorating in only two to three years as opposed to the quality teak that will last anywhere from 30-50 years. One way to determine if you have a quality piece of teak furniture is the price. Usually the higher the price tag, the better the product. However, some dealers get around the high price tags by selling in large volume.
Another way to determine the quality of your teak furniture is the weight of the product. A quality piece of teak furniture is not light! A quality teak chair will weigh in upwards of 35 to 40 pounds. An inexpensive chair from a discount shop will weigh much lighter.

High-quality teak has a smooth grain and no knots or small pieces glued together. A lesser quality piece of teak furniture is likely to be lightweight, knotted and held together with metal screws and bolts.

If you are shopping for high quality teak, do your research. Make sure you are getting your moneys worth.

Questions to Be Asked Before You Go For Carpet Cleaning

Carpet enhances the look of the room and no one would like to keep it dirty as well as smelly. So efforts must be taken to clean the carpet regularly so as to prevent the germs from sticking to it. Good carpet cleaners can help you to clean your carpet very nicely so that you do not face any problem with your carpet. Carpet cleaners will not only remove away the stains and the odors but at the same time they would also enhance the durability of the carpet. However, you need to know few things before you hire a carpet cleaner.

Method of Cleaning:

When you contact a carpet cleaner, the first question that you should ask to them is their method of cleaning. Generally two methods are followed for carpet cleaning.

(1) Hot Water Extraction.

(2) Low Moisture Cleaning.

In the first method, the carpet is first rinsed off with a good cleaning solution and it is then be vacuumed. This is the most common method for rug cleaning at home.

In the second method, the contaminants from the carpet cannot be removed. But it effectively makes the carpet look good and attractive. This cleaning method is obvious for commercial purposes and not home.

So if you want to clean your home carpets, you should go for the first method.

Duration:

The next question that you should ask the cleaners is that how much time they would take in total to clean the carpet totally. This timing should also include the time for drying the carpet. Drying generally does not take more than 1-2 hours. A total of 6 hours is typical but do not go for those cleaning which asks for more than 8 hours.

Equipment:

Ask the carpet cleaner if they make use of truck mount equipment for carpet cleaning. The truck mount equipment can flush, vacuum as well as provide the heat which is necessary for thoroughly cleaning the carpet. No other equipment can clean the carpet so thoroughly as this.

Service Guarantee:

Do not hesitate to ask about the guarantee of service from them. If possible, take a written note from them so that you can charge them if the guarantee period is not served. At the same time, if they are unable to keep the guarantee they should refund you the full money. A guarantee that does not offer full refund is not considered to be a guarantee at all.

Cost:

Last but not the least is the amount or the rate they would charge from you. You definitely have a fix budget for carpet cleaning and so the cost should be known from before.

Save on Carpet Installation – Do It Yourself!

Carpet installation by professionals may cost you more than you thought. If you look at the itemization on the bill you'll find something that may look like this: $2.40/sq. yd. For old carpet removal, $4.75/sq. yd. to install new carpet, $10.25 (each) to install carpet on stairs, $30 per hour to move furniture, $.20 per linear foot to replace tackless strip... and so on. You get the picture.

Tools & Equipment

So here's a short primer on how to install carpet yourself. Although it's not an easy job, it's not brain surgery, either. You'll need include a tape measure, utility knife, hammer, heavy-duty stapler, chalk line, duct tape, gloves, carpet seam tape, safety goggles, and kneepads. Rental equipment includes a knee kicker, a carpet stretcher, a seam cutter, seaming iron, seam roller, wall trimmer, and strip cutter.

Getting Ready

First remove all baseboards and cut manageable strips of the old carpet (about 2' wide) with the utility knife. Loosen it from the tackless strips and roll up. Remove the tackless strips and the old carpet underlay. Vacuum area thoroughly.

Install new tackless strips around the perimeter of the room with teeth facing the wall. Using a block of wood as a spacer, leave about a ½" space between the strip and the wall.

Laying Underlayment & Carpet

Beginning at a corner and hooking it over the tackless strips, lay new underlay strips right next to one another, but don't overlap them. Staple along the inner side of the tackless strip and then trim excess. Duct tape the seams.

Roll out the carpet and fold one end over itself. Mark the measurement of the longest wall plus 6" on both edges of the carpet. Using the chalk line, join the two marks. Place scrap piece lumber the carpet you're about to cut (so you don't accidentally cut through the carpet underneath!) and use a utility knife and straight edge to cut off the piece you've just marked.

Using Knee Kickers and Carpet Stretchers

Place the toothed end of the knee kicker into the carpet about 3" from the wall and push your knee with as much force as possible into the padded end of the kicker. The idea is to stretch the carpet over the tackless strip where the teeth of the strip will grab it, holding it tightly in place.

Place one end of the carpet stretcher against the wall where you've attached the carpet with the other end of it about six inches from the opposite wall. Pushing the lever on it, stretch the carpet to fit snugly over the tackless strip on the opposite side of the room. Work your way around the perimeter of the room, trimming the excess carpet at the edges with a wall trimmer.

Working With Seams

Overlap the first piece of carpet by 4" to 6", and with the seam cutter, cut through both layers, making sure the edges match exactly. Pull back the seam and center (adhesive side up) a strip of seaming tape on the floor beneath. Run the seaming iron along the tape to activate the adhesive and then replace the two carpet seams down onto it. Go over the seam with a carpet seam roller.

Tuck down the carpet between the wall and the tackless strips using a stair tool and hammer. Trim carpet at doorways with centered edges and install door-edge strips. Replace baseboards, and...you're finished!

Carpet Cleaning How To - Three Carpeting Cleaning Tips You Don't Want To Miss

Do you need a few carpet cleaning how to tips?

Do you avoid inviting friends and family to your house because of
unsightly carpet stains and embarrassing carpet odors?

Do your children and pets always seem to track mud across the
carpet?

Do your children --or perhaps you -- spill drinks on the carpet
on an almost daily basis?

If you would like to end your dread of dirty and smelly carpets,
relax and follow these three simple carpet cleaning tips for
keeping your carpet stain free and for carpet odor removal.

Carpet Cleaning Tip #1: Routine Maintenance for a Longer Life

Vacuum your carpets on a regular basis. Dirt, pet hair, and
other grime accumulate in the carpet fibers resulting in dirty
looking carpet and problems for allergy sufferers. If the dirt
and grime is left to build up, your carpet can become damaged and
it will be more difficult to thoroughly clean.

Carpet Cleaning Tip #2: Clean Spills Immediately

Clean up spills immediately to avoid odors and stains. If a
solid substance --food or animal waste -- is the problem, use
paper towels to carefully remove the mess before cleaning the
carpet. Take care to lift the mess straight up without further
rubbing it into the carpet. Once the problem is removed, begin to
clean the spot with plain water and paper towels or clean rags.
Blot the area with the paper towels and then using the towels,
move in a circular motion clockwise and then repeat going counter
clockwise to remove all traces of the mess. Avoid scrubbing the
carpet spill as this may damage the fibers of the carpet.

Carpet Cleaning Tip #3: Use the Mildest Form of Cleaner Possible

If plain water does not remove the spill, combine water and a
small amount of mild liquid soap. This solution should help
remove most stains. However, if you still can't get the spill
clean, consider a chemical carpet spot remover. Remember that
chemicals can damage carpet fibers and products designed
specifically to remove carpet stains may contain dangerous
chemicals.

Use chemical products sparingly. Make sure you work in a well
ventilated area and wear gloves. Before using a chemical cleaner,
test it in a hidden area to make sure it will not discolor or harm
your carpet . To clean the spot, apply a small amount of the spot
remover to a rag and wipe gently in a circular motion. Rinse with
clean water and blot dry with more rags. Remove as much water as
possible to avoid mildew or carpet damage.

Taking the time to clean up spills immediately will prevent the
unsightly carpet stains and embarrassing carpet odors that may
prevent you from enjoying the company of friends and family in
your own home.

Carpet Cleaning Machines

With the invention of Carpet, the invention of a Carpet cleaning machine was not far away. The first hand held Carpet cleaning machine was designed and tested in the 1860's in Chicago, while the first power operated vacuum machine was invented in the early 1900's by an English man named H. Cecil Booth.

At around the same time as H. Cecil Booth's invention, a man by the name of James Murray Spangler came up with his own vacuum cleaner invention, which he later sold to his cousin Hoover. As you well know, Hoover has become one of the most prominent names in the vacuum cleaning machine business and is certain one of the most popular household names in the western world.

The vacuum cleaner was heralded as a blessing in disguise for many housewives, whose weekly task it was to keep the house clean. Initially, vacuum cleaners were only capable of sucking up dust and dirt, but with modern technology inventors were soon capable of designing a wet-cleaner that can steam carpets and kill germs.

Carpet was capable of covering the floor of a house, flat, or bungalow and keeping peoples feet warm in winter. Initially, people needed to sweep their floors, or carpets, but with the invention of the vacuum cleaner, people could easily detract the dirt and dust from their carpets with less effort. It was also realized that businesses, apartments and corporations would need someone to clean their carpets too, so the invention of the commercial carpet cleaners was next.

Essentially, the vacuum cleaner operates using a pump system. The pumping device sucks up air from a house, which in turn sucks up the dust and dirt from anything in front of the house opening. Inside the vacuum cleaner is a filtering system that collects the dust and dirt that can later be placed in the garbage outside.

Currently there are seven main types of vacuum cleaners; the upright vacuum cleaner, the Canister vacuum cleaner, the back-pack style vacuum cleaner, the built-in vacuum cleaner, the robotic vacuum cleaner, the hand held vacuum cleaner and the wet/dry vacuum cleaners. These different types of vacuum cleaners are available in different styles, sizes and have various voltage/power potentials.

One of the most significant developments in carpet cleaning machines has been the invention of the cyclone carpet cleaner. Unlike previous carpet cleaning machines, the cyclone carpet cleaner collects dust and dirt in a large cylinder type container. The cyclone carpet cleaner operates using a central air force and a number of filters. These filters filter the dust and dirt into stages, so that the air being sucked up into the cylinder container can then be cleaned and re-released into the air through a central outlet.

Robotic vacuum cleaners are also a relatively new invention, enabling the carpet to be cleaned by a carpet cleaning machine without the need of people power. Using a simple control mechanisms, the robotic vacuum cleaner can navigate its way around the floor of an apartment, or home, cleaning dust and particles from the floor and then return to its docking station for re-charging.

Arthritis in Dogs - Natural Dog Pain Relief

It's really bizarre, the number of animals suffering from 'people' type disease like arthritis in dogs. To see some poor dog limping around, (and it's happening in younger ones) is something most of us cannot bear to watch.

It's true that it's more common in the larger breeds and in particular the purebreds, but I have to say even smaller dogs have arthritis pain. As for the purebreds, I believe that the genetic manipulation which is prevalent in their lines may cause expression of various desired traits like coat color, structure, behavior etc., but at the expense of heartier, sturdy genetics resulting in chronic ailments coming out which in nature, they would not.

Arthr (joint) itis (inflammation) is as it's root words indicate, an inflammation in the joints, particularly the weight bearing ones. Commonly, dog arthritis pain occurs in the hips and ankle joints.

The normal joint is the meeting of two bones which are lined with a pad of cartilage and bathed in a nutrient rich liquid called synovial fluid. In arthritis, the fluid starts to dry up, the cartilage thins and as this gets worse and worse the two bones end up rubbing together creating bone destruction and crippling pain.

Obviously, your dog can't tell you about their joint pain..so look for symptoms or indications such as:

1) Favoring one leg

Don't forget that inflammation in one area of the body, will predispose to inflammatory problems throughout, such as Diabetes, Heart problems, Skin disorders, etc.

Glucosamine For Dogs and Other Natural Solutions For Dogs With Arthritis

First and foremost, do NOT give your dog any Ibruprofen or Tylenol-type medications! They are extremely toxic to animals and just far too risky. Besides, they solve nothing. Your dog is not suffering from joint pain and arthritis because they lack acetominophen or ibruprophen!

The best anti-inflammatory for dogs is in their food. And they key to avoiding arthritis in dogs is to feed them naturally, chemical free food from day one.

Commercial pet food is filled with dye, chemical flavor enhancers, preservatives and that doesn't even mention the quality of the 'protein'. That can be from dead, diseased animals, chicken feathers, beaks and feet. It's really very disgusting.

I was fortunate enough to find a book by a Vet who had lost his dear pet to these types of foods and according to him the typical medications he was trained to use in college. Dr. Jones admitted that approach is wrong.

Combine that information with the use natural arthritis cures such as glucosamine for dogs, homeopathics like Rhus Tox for stiffness, Ruta Grav for acutual joint pain and Belladonna for that really hot, sore joint.

Arthritis in dogs can be treated successfully and changes in your dog's diet will save them from other chronic diseases, leaving them to live happy healthy lives.

When Was the Last Time Your House Had a Bath?

Just like anything else, your home's exterior becomes less visually appealing with the accumulation of dirt and grime. The build up is slow so you might not notice that your house is looking less vibrant and not really showing its best side anymore. A common comment after cleaning the outside of home is "Wow! That's a huge difference."

In order to give your home a good cleaning, you need to acquire a power washer. A washer can be purchased from home improvement stores for a few hundred dollars up to around $1,000. The higher prices units have a pressure rating of approximately 3,000 psi, which is really more than most homeowners will require. A rating of 1,200 psi to 2,000 psi will be sufficient and these washers sell for much less than their larger counterparts. In the alternative, a unit can be rented for around $60 per day.

A pressure washer can be used on any typical siding although there are guidelines to keep in mind for any surface type:

Do not aim the washer at people. The pressurized water is very dangerous and can puncture skin and cause eye damage. Power washers are not just fancy water guns!

Do not spray power washers at windows or electrical boxes.

Make sure your windows are closed so that overspray does not get inside the house.

Start at the top of the house and work your way down.

Begin spraying at about three feet from the wall and slowly bring the power washer nozzle closer until the washer is working effectively.

Additionally, there are guidelines specific to the your siding type.

For wood siding, move the power washer wand parallel with the siding and do not hold the water stream in one place. This prevents the water from gouging out portions of the wood and marring the surface. If you were to hold the pressure washer on one spot, it would slowly dig a hole in the siding.

For stucco homes, be aware the surface can be washed away and to hold the washer nozzle back far enough that you are not removing the surface of the stucco.

For vinyl siding, be sure not aim the water stream up at the wall as this will force water under the siding. Spray level or at a downward angle to avoid this.

Using these tips you can clean your home and give it that "like new" look again. Just be aware that you will get very wet in the process so a raincoat might not be a bad idea. This might be the most fun you have ever had cleaning your house!

How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell

This page lists some of the most effective baths for removing skunk smell. They can be used on both people and pets. Here's some things to keep in mind if when treating a skunked animal:

* The sooner you wash your pet, the easier it will be to remove the musk.

* Take care not to get any of the bath water into the eyes or ears - it burns. A small amount of Vaseline applied to the eyebrows is effective for protecting the eyes.

* If you must pick up your animal to wash in the sink or bathtub, use a towel to avoid getting skunked yourself.

* Don't let your pet touch anything inside of your house unless you want it to smell like skunk.

Peroxide/baking soda bath

This is currently the most effective de-skunking bath, but the peroxide can potentially bleach your animals fur. Lemon juice or white vinegar can be substituted for the peroxide, but they don't work as well.

In the bathtub or a bucket, mix together:

* 1 gallon water

* 1 quart hydrogen peroxide ~3% solution

* 1 cup baking soda

* 1 good squirt of hand or dish soap

The mixture will fizz. Use a sponge and lather it into the fur/skin taking care to avoid the ears and eyes. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse and repeat.
Orange bath

Blend 5-10 oranges in a blender, mix with a little soap and lather up with the resulting liquid. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse, then wash with regular shampoo.
Soda bath

Some people swear by bathing their animals in soda. We've heard of people using sprite and coke but haven't yet tested it ourselves. Work the soda into the fur, rinse and then wash with regular shampoo. Repeat as needed and let us know how this one works.
Commercial skunk smell removers

Of all the commercially available skunk odor removers, Nature's Miracle always seems to get the most praise. Find it in your local pet store.

Three Hot Carpet Cleaning Tips

Nearly everyone has carpet in their homes and can use a few good tips for the care and cleaning of carpet. No one like avoiding inviting friends and family over to your home because the carpet has odors or embarrassing carpet stains. Maybe it is because your pets or children track dirt and mud through the home after being outside. Maybe it is because of drink spills on the carpet.

Whatever the reason, you can put an end to dirty, smelly carpet if you choose to with the following tips on keeping your carpet stain and odor free.

The first thing you need to do is routine maintenance to prolong the life of your carpet. Make sure to vacuum regularly because dirt, grime and even pet hair can accumulate within the fibers of the carpet to cause a dirty appearance and in some cases problems for those with allergies. If you leave the dirt to build up it can cause damage to the carpet and make it more difficult to clean when you do it.

Make sure to clean up any spills immediately before the stain sets in or odors spring up. If the spill is of a solid consistency you may use paper towels to remove as much as possible prior to addressing any stain in the carpet. Do not rub the stain but lift it straight off the carpet to keep the staining to a minimum. After the mess is removed you can begin to clean the spot with a paper towel and plain water. At first use a blotting motion in the area followed by a clockwise motion and then a counter clockwise motion to remove any stains. You do not want to scrub at the carpet because that can damage the carpet fibers.

Lastly you should use as mild a cleaner as possible for the stain. If water does not remove it add just a touch of detergent and this should remove most stains that you encounter. If this technique does not take the stain out there is another article with additional stain removal tips mentioned later in the article. You should know that some chemicals may damage carpets so best is to use chemicals that are designed for use on carpet and even then use them sparingly.

Whenever working on stains you should make sure to used gloves to protect your skin and test in a small less noticeable area to make sure the carpet does not discolor. Use circular motions and smaller amounts of liquid, there is no need to saturate the area. When finished rinse with clean water and blot dry with clean white towels to remove as much liquid as possible.

If you can take the time to clean up stains and spills immediately, it will help to prevent odors and persistent stains that can cause embarrassment when trying to get together with friends and family.

Cleaning up spills to prevent stains and odors may not be fun, but it is necessary when you want to keep your carpet looking and smelling its best. For additional tips on carpet care and stain removal visit the link below.

I Want to Be Rich!

I want to be rich! I make no bones about it! It's a fact. I want to be dramatically, deliriously, deliciously, Rich! Screw modesty. Modesty is for monks. Give me Money. Lots of it. I don't just want to be comfortable. If I wanted to be comfortable, I would go to bed with my duvet. I want to be rich!

I know I'm not supposed to talk this way, or feel this way, or act this way. It is rather gauche. But that's the way it is... It's time for truth! Time to expose all the lies about money, that have been fed to the masses for all these years. Time to rid ourselves of all the distorted descriptions and erroneous little sayings.

Let us begin - Shall we? No Time like the present!

Filthy Rich - Why do we refer to the rich, as filthy? When was the last time you saw a filthy rich person? Filthy poor person, maybe, but filthy rich person. Never!

Dirty Money - I don't care how dirty money is. I'll send it to the laundry, while I'm relaxing in my emerald green, marble tub, with my fireplace crackling in the background.

Money isn't everything. Tell that to your landlord! Money is everything, when your rent is due, when your dog wants out of the vets, when your car runs out of gas, when McDonald's just won't cut in any more.

Money won't buy you happiness. Let me try... please, let me try! I would rather be rich and miserable, than poor and miserable. I can always drown my sorrows on the Champs Elysees, deal with my depression on a Caribbean cruise ship, or cry my heart out under a blue Hawaiian sunset.

It is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to get into heaven. Give me a Break! That, my friends, was written by a poor man. If you're rich, you don't need to get into heaven, you're already there.

Money won't buy you love. Money will buy you freedom, freedom will buy you opportunity, opportunity could find you love. Besides, even if that were true, I happen to love money. I love the look of it, the feel of it, the smell of it, and I would rather roll around on my bear skin rug with a pile of thousand dollar bills, than a man any day.

Money is the root of all evil. Then, why are the poor areas of any city, the most crime ridden. The truth is, that poverty is the root of all evil. Poverty Sucks. Poverty is man's refusal to accept the truth, that he is unlimited. That he has the ability to be all that he can be. That anything is possible, if he chooses it.

Money is about choices. Being rich is a choice. Being poor is a choice.

Why don't we all drop the scarcity consciousness and get on with it. If we all went out and spent our money and kept it circulating, there would always be plenty to go around. Hoarding it doesn't do anyone, any good. Only the Banks. They are the one's that are in heaven now. We should re-name them, Celestial First Trust.

I don't know about you, but I'm taking a stand. I intend to have it all. And when I get it, if I don't like it, I can always go back to where I was before, if I choose to. But I won't know if I like it, until I try it. Kind of like I didn't know I wouldn't like oysters, until I tried them. It's a lot truer to say you don't want or need something after you've had it, than before.

So, if you happen to see me driving by in my chauffeured driven, silver, rolls royce limousine with a kind of satisfied glint in my eye, remember... You choose to be rich or you choose to be poor.

Choose Rich. It really is better!

Do-It-Yourself Decorating

Theme decorating is a very popular way of decorating homes and offices across the US. We live in the melting pot here in the US with people from all over the world. These people want to have reminders of home around them. Then there are those of us who were born here, but have a fascination with another country's style of decor. There was a time when every American home you visited contained traditional American style furniture. Furniture was made from the finest of wood and steal. Today we have so many choices. We are now traveling, importing and exporting furnishings from everywhere in the world.

If you like oriental style furniture and rugs, you can get the most beautiful screens, rugs and other Chinese furniture now in the US or by ordering it straight from China over the internet. Victorian styles have long been admired here in the US as well. People are even trying there hand at decorating rooms in their homes with multi themes. One room may serve as the oriental room while another serves as an American classic. There is no limit to the imagination today.

Some people who travel love to display their souvenirs from other places they've been. A room could be decorated around an African theme with a faux fur bear skin rug, fertility statues and zebra lamps. Another idea could be room based on the Australian outback, or Great Barrier Reef with a coffee table conversation piece from your trip. Right here in America people love the beach and have the beach homes reflect that love.

An open, airy home with sheer window treatments bright colors and a couple of Adirondack chairs on each deck to watch the sun rise and set is the ultimate beach lover's setting. Conch shells from the Caribbean would accent this themed room for example. A piece of driftwood is a free and inspiring addition.

Although a lot of the flowers that grow in the tropics don't grow here, you can create that same sense in your home by painting your walls in tropical blues, greens and melons. Some people are even having murals painted in certain rooms of their homes. You want to make sure you see the artists' best work. One wall featuring this bold color of choice works well also.

Bold strips and patterns were once designated for wallpaper. That is no longer the case. With a roll of painters' tape, you can create a professional finish of your own design.

Whatever your desires in decorating are, today they can be brought to fruition. If you can't make your dream happen with the resources at your local home improvement store, the internet makes it all possible. Whether interior or exterior decorating, you can make it happen within your budget. Yard sales and second hand stores sometimes carry global treasures someone else thought was trash. With a little refurbishing it can be new again. If the budget doesn't allow for your decorating vision, do it yourself.
